Here is Blue Guy vs Red Guy – the 3D animated short that I spent much of my free time on this summer. It started as an exercise – a way of getting my feet wet in 3D character animation – but before I knew it these two were becoming characters with a relationship and a compelling little story arc. They sort of decided they wanted to be in a movie.

CGI character animationOnce again, it was a pleasure to work with composer Karl Preusser. This is the third piece he’s done for me and he always brings something good to the party. Also, this was the first time I worked with Kevin Scott.  Kevin has done sound design for animation before at Funny Garbage, where I have also worked.  As you can hear, he did a great job and was a delight to work with.

It’s great to watch vectors and equations come to life through animation, and I love the situation and silliness that follows when you tweak the rules that don’t really exist in the digital space. A ball can weigh a ton one minute, then float away the next, and the only thing you’re focusing on is not the improbability, but the reality of the characters and their emotions. The takeaway isn’t “Wow, look at the way they switched the physics model.” It’s “Red guy misses his friend.” And that’s what it’s a 3D animated short is all about connecting your two CGI characters in a brief moment that the audience shares.

I’d like to make a few more of these guys, and other unique CGI characters, so I hope you enjoyed it, and please let me know if you’d like to see more of these Red Guy and Blue Guy.
